Dr. Shagufta Khanam

b. 1979 | Painter | Lucknow, India

" My paintings are an attempt to make the invisible connection perceptible—not by showing nature as it appears on the surface, but by exploring what lies beneath it: its depth, its energy, its hidden stories, its structures, its connections and its quiet rhythm. "

- Dr Shagufta Khanam – Contemporary Indian Artist

Biography

Dr. Shagufta Khanam is a contemporary Indian artist based in Lucknow, India, whose artistic journey spans more than two decades. Born in Atrauli, Aligarh, in 1979, she developed an interest in drawing from an early age. She pursued her formal education in Fine Arts at Aligarh Muslim University, completing a B. Honours in Fine Arts in 1999, an M.F.A. in 2001, a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Arts in 2002, and a Ph.D. in Painting in 2014.

Her years of formal education were marked by extensive experimentation with oil, acrylic, clay, paper, paper mache and mural-making, alongside drawing, portraiture, still life and model studies. She later explored Applied Arts, including lettering, book covers and illustration. In 2003, she worked as a freelance artist with the Academy of South Asian Studies, illustrating children's books, including a publication based on Persian stories.

Her early independent practice included figurative painting, nature studies and social themes, with particular attention to women's experiences, identity, freedom, responsibility and social limitations. Around 2004–05, she developed a body of work titled “Limitations,” exploring the restrictions and expectations placed upon women and addressing issues including female foeticide. Her doctoral research focused on contemporary artist Arpana Caur, deepening her engagement with women, nature and social realities.

After completing her Ph.D., Khanam moved to Lucknow and continued developing her artistic practice alongside family responsibilities. She worked as a teacher until 2017 before returning more seriously to painting. In 2018, she joined the Lalit Kala Akademi Regional Centre, Lucknow, where access to a dedicated working environment gave renewed momentum to her artistic experimentation.

Her practice gradually moved from recognisable imagery towards abstraction. Her longstanding connection with nature, together with her childhood fascination with the rhythm and movement of a gramophone record, contributed to her exploration of rhythm, movement and the living world. She initially experimented with fluid approaches, colour and layering before developing a more deliberate process using oil and acrylic, direct brushwork, organic forms, lines, layers and cellular structures.

Today, Khanam's visual language centres on the unseen life within nature. Her layered surfaces suggest hidden histories and structures, while overlapping organic forms express interconnectedness, growth and movement. She frequently works with earthy colours, including sap green, burnt sienna and burnt umber, reflecting the relationship between earth, nature and life. For Khanam, rhythm represents balance, continuity and interconnected movement between nature, earth, life and the universe.

Khanam has participated in numerous solo, group, national and international exhibitions across India since 2003. Her solo exhibition “Rhythm” was held at the Lalit Kala Academy Regional Centre, Aliganj, Lucknow, in 2019. Her exhibition history includes presentations at Lalit Kala Akademi centres, AIFACS, the Indian Academy of Fine Arts, museum and gallery spaces, and numerous national and international art exhibitions. She has also participated in art camps and workshops associated with institutions including Lalit Kala Akademi, the National Gallery of Modern Art, State Museum Shimla, Eastern Foundation of Art & Culture and R.V. University, Bengaluru.

Her recognitions include the Best Exhibit Award by Anand Art Mission (2026), 21st Annual Indian Royal Academy National Award (2025), Gold Category Award by Manikarnika Art Gallery (2025), MANU Award of Honour (2024), Raja Ravi Verma Gold Award (2023), Naari Samman (2023), 30th Pragati Chitra International Golden Award (2020), Ratan-e-Hind (2019), and Prafulla Dahanukar City Award (2019). Her works are held in collections including the State Museum, Shimla; State Lalit Kala Academy, Lucknow; and private collections in India, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

Through her continuing practice, Dr. Shagufta Khanam seeks to reveal what cannot always be seen, make the invisible felt, and create a quiet space in which viewers can pause, look inward and experience the living rhythm connecting nature, earth and life.
